DESIGN: SHAPED FOR POWER
Like all Aprilia motorcycles, the Shiver 750 features highly innovative design, in which form and function combine to create a motorcycle of distinctive character. Every line is perfectly coherent with the advanced technology of the Aprilia Shiver 750.
The engine and frame are the pivotal points around which the design team developed the fundamental elements of the Shiver 750’s unique styling. Every part is functional as well as stylish, and the overall look is refined and understated. The Shiver 750’s exhaust system, for example, is an essential design element. On an Aprilia naked with such aggressive looks, excitement and elegance blending into an indissoluble whole, technology is fundamental to the overall design.
Sit on the Shiver 750’s seat, and you will immediately appreciate how the sports riding position places you in complete control, enabling you to handle the motorcycle with relaxed confidence even – or especially – on routes where performance riding offers an exhilarating challenge. The riding position creates instant symbiosis between man and machine, and creates the feeling that you have always ridden a Shiver 750. The stainless steel exhaust splits into two before terminating in triangular silencers. The exhaust is integrated under the seat of the motorcycle, enhancing stylistic symmetry and improving the distribution of mass and weight, aided by the rational and technically more effective lateral location of the rear monoshock.
90° V TWIN ENGINE: RIDE-BY-WIRE TECHNOLOGY AND TRI-MAP POWER MAPPING
The Shiver 750 rider is always in complete control of his machine thanks to advanced ride-by-wire throttle control. The rider can even select the power profile best suited to road conditions and riding style, by means of a user friendly switch on the handlebars. Aprilia’s quest for an easy, satisfying, fun ride for all – and under all conditions – has led to the development of a range of technically advanced solutions:
• 90° V twin engine layout • Ride-by-wire technology with Tri-Map power mapping • Very over-square bore to stroke ratio • Four valves per cylinder • Double overhead cam with mixed gear and chain timing drive • Electronic fuel injection with two throttle bodies • Stick-coils integrated in the spark plug caps • Three way catalytic converter and Lambda probe • Hydraulically operated clutch
The Aprilia Shiver 750 is the first ever production motorcycle equipped with integral ride-by-wire electronic throttle control. This advanced system controls the throttles and regulates their action according to the selected power mapping, on the basis of rider input and conditions like engine speed, selected gear, throttle aperture and speed of twist grip movement, atmospheric temperature and pressure. The engine therefore always delivers exactly the acceleration and power band the rider wants, ‘tailored’ to the chosen mapping. Ride-by-wire electronic throttle control gives improved torque and smoother power at low to medium revs, optimising engine functioning even at low loads when the throttle bodies are only partly open. Plenty of torque is always available over an extended power band. Vibrations are extremely low too, so that power delivery is smooth and linear. In addition, for the first time ever, riders can choose between three possible power mappings: “Rain” for easy control on wet roads and under conditions of poor grip, “Touring” for routes on which smooth action and fluid power are essential and “Sport” for situations in which you need instant power and high engine speeds. To choose between these three riding styles all you need to do is select the right mapping using a practical selector near the thumb of your right hand. You will feel the difference in power delivery the very next time you open the throttle. And the power profile will be exactly what you need for the riding conditions. All Aprilia Shiver 750 motorcycles are “Tri-Map ready”, and even older models can be updated with this new technology in just a few minutes, free of charge, at any authorised Aprilia Service Centre.
A special mention goes to the valve timing system. The four valves per cylinder are operated by two camshafts driven by a mixed gear and chain system. This solution has already been used by Aprilia on the V60 engine that powers the mighty RSV 1000 R, and not only reduces the overall length of the engine but also contributes to more precise and reliable valve timing. Because the chain section of the drive train is shorter, it is less stressed and therefore lasts longer. The latest generation injection system uses microspray injectors. This, together with advanced cylinder head fluid dynamics, ensures optimum combustion for greater power and cleaner emissions.
The 90° V twin installed in Aprilia’s Shiver 750 develops a maximum power of 95 HP at 9,000 rpm and maximum torque of 81 Nm at 7,000 rpm. Generous torque even at low revs gives the Shiver 750 an unrivalled ride, especially on fast country roads, thanks also to the fact that three different power mappings allow you to choose the best possible performance for road characteristics and weather conditions.
A latest generation ECU manages all engine parameters, with a CAN (Controlled Area Network) line carrying all signals to an instrument cluster that incorporates a self-diagnostic terminal. The CAN line uses only two wires to handle all data, dramatically simplifying the electrical system.
Thanks to the Shiver 750’s advanced electronics, power development in the restricted 25 kW version is identical to that of the full power version until the maximum permitted power threshold is reached. On less evolved motorcycles power restriction means reduced power across the entire range, but the Shiver 750 offers acceleration far superior to that of its 25 kW alternatives, for unspoilt riding pleasure.
FRAME: RATIONALITY AND EFFICIENCY
Everybody knows that Aprilias offer tremendous performance. The Shiver 750 represents further proof of the extremely intuitive and agile ride of Aprilia motorcycles. The Shiver 750 chassis delivers amazing performance under all riding conditions. The frame embodies Aprilia’s extensive experience, and benefits from the latest research into mixed steel and alloy frame designs, as employed on the futuristic RXV and SXV, which have already won so many top level races. The top half of the frame is a tubular steel trellis. This is secured to extended side castings by special high strength bolts. The structure formed by these two elements is extremely rigid and stable, and represents the best possible solution for harnessing the generous dose of horsepower provided by the Aprilia V twin engine.
The development of a new Aprilia demands the closest cooperation between the frame and engine design teams. The decision to use a 90° V twin necessitated development of a frame that is rational, solid and reliable under the most extreme riding conditions. Perfect longitudinal engine positioning and lateral mounting of the rear monoshock have led to the creation of an extremely compact motorcycle. These same solutions have also freed up valuable space for the exhaust collectors, allowing development of the perfect shape and volume for maximum power output.
The aluminium swingarm with reinforcement truss is big enough to guarantee a solid feel from the rear wheel even under sports riding conditions.
SUSPENSION
A 43 mm upside down fork with shell-cast bottom and radial calipers add smooth but powerful braking to the usual characteristics of comfort. Wheel travel of 120 mm lets you tackle town centre cobbles and twisting mountain roads with relaxed confidence. The steering yokes are in forged aluminium, in keeping with the bike’s sporting nature. The laterally mounted shock absorber pivots directly on the swingarm in a cantilever arrangement, and provides adjustments for spring preload and hydraulic rebound. Rear wheel travel is 130 mm.
BRAKES
The Shiver 750’s radial calipers promise truly impressive stopping power combined with the smooth action you need to face whatever the road can throw at you in total safety. The 320 mm front discs are the same as those fitted to Aprilia’s supersport flagships, the RSV 1000 R and Tuono 1000 R. A 245 mm disc with single piston caliper on the rear wheel provides more than adequate backup for the front brakes. Both the front and rear brakes are fitted with aeronautical type metal braided brake lines to eliminate the sponginess inevitably associated with conventional rubber hoses and to deliver maximum braking precision.
COMPONENTS
- The digital-analog Matrix instrument panel receives all its information over the CAN line and incorporates its own memory to allow it to act as an integral part of the self-diagnostics system. The design is extremely modern, compact and lightweight. All functions can be accessed by means of a handlebar control. The LED backlighting can be adjusted to three levels of brightness and is white in the analog area and red in the digital area. The power mappings are identified by their initial letters (R for Rain, T for Touring and S for Sport). These flash in negative when first selected, and becomes positive as soon as the throttle twist grip is closed and re-opened to activate the new mode. - The twin taper aluminium handlebars are derived directly from those fitted to the Tuono, Aprilia’s flagship naked. This prestigious component, which ensures lightweight, precision control, is not found on any other middleweight naked. - The double parabola front light has a complex surface profile and a double parking light. - The hydraulically operated clutch is an advanced technical solution that ensures a consistently precise action and exceptional smoothness. The clutch is also self-adjusting and completely maintenance free. | APRILIA Shiver 750 Technical Specifications | | Engine | Aprilia V90, liquid cooled, longitudinal 90° V twin four stroke.
