THE LEGEND LIVES ON 20 years after the very first GS 600 LC4 came onto the scene, the 690 Enduro is writing a brand new Hard Enduro chapter. Beginning in the 1990s, the KTM LC4 was the measure of all things in the single-cylinder segment. Now with the 690 Enduro, KTM is introducing a completely reconstructed motorcycle with revolutionary technology that is once again emerging as the trailblazer for the entire segment.
ENDURO ALL-ROUNDER Utilizing the vast experience gained from riding millions of offroad kilometres, many of them in the tough competitive environment, a trend-setting Enduro was created in Mattighofen for the 2008 model year that meets the high expectations of all offroad fans. Rough riding in rugged terrain is just as easily mastered in the saddle of the new LC4-Enduro as long-range asphalt riding. So this elaborately constructed and very lightweight, four-valve single offers you a range of capabilities that is broader than ever before. Featuring 62 HP, this bike offers a completely new level of power and exemplifies in the ever-growing LC4 family everything that can now be expected from a KTM Hard Enduro.
A trendsetting tubular space frame design Excellent suspension components from WP Self-supporting rear fender-fuel tank Super-sporty ergonomics Universal capabilities State-of-the-art LC4 engine technology Unrivalled performance Minimal weight
CHASSIS
FRAME A supremely innovative and super-sturdy tubular space frame. Developed using the latest analysis and simulation technologies, its construction of thin-walled chrome-molybdenum tubes guarantees maximum torsional rigidity for excellent tracking stability at the minimal weight of just over 8 kilos. The concept was based on our successful rally racing bike, so that’s why the airbox is situated above the cylinder.
WEIGHT A thoroughly puristic concept, high-tech engine and the use of lightweight materials result in a playfully low, “Ready to Race” weight of 138 kg.
REAR FENDER A revolutionary, self-supporting, one-piece fuel tank-rear fender unit, made of robust plastic with no additional metal braces. The optimum use of space combined with sporty ergonomics makes room for a 12-litre tank capacity. An integrated fuel pump is at the bottom and fuelling is accomplished through the lockable tank cap behind the seat. The installation of the supplied foot rests and handles easily readies the bike for pillion use.
CHASSIS The fully adjustable, 48-mm USD forks from WP guarantee excellent damping, incomparable tracking stability and high reserves. The WP shock absorber with an integrated compensation tank is attached by means of a Pro-Lever linkage system and has adjustable rebound damping and spring preload. The suspension travel is 250 mm, both front and rear.
SWINGARM A one-piece, aluminium die-cast swingarm encloses the frame. Its contour was shaped to follow the bending moment curve to provide suspension-assisting flex properties in conjunction with the lowest possible weight. A Pro-Lever linkage gives the shock absorber a progressive pivot point and allows the rear damper to be placed in a low and steeply slanted position to make room for a maximum fuel tank capacity.
BRAKES Designed for demanding enduro use, the Brembo brake system guarantees the usual high KTM standards for braking performance. A double sliding piston and a 300-mm brake disc up front and a single-piston caliper with a 240-mm disc at the rear ensure excellent application and high reserves.
AIRBOX Nestled within the tubular space frame, the large-volume airbox above the cylinder offers high performance and, with the aid of the long intake snorkel, the efficient absorption of sound. The air filter’s large paper folds offer an extensive and effective cleansing of the intake air; the intake port is under the seat in a location that’s shielded from dirt.
EXHAUST SYSTEM The narrow design of the frame permits a lateral and thereby direct arrangement of the powerful single header pipe, leading from the cylinder straight to the elaborately designed, stainless steel silencer. Its large volume ensures a minimal noise level, while the regulated catalytic converter oversees the effortless compliance with the EURO III emissions limits.
SEAT The sporty and slim seat extends to the steering head and offers maximum freedom of movement, thanks to its elongated form. Easy access to the airbox and electrics thanks to a cable noose seat release.
BODYWORK The rear fender tank and all around new plastic parts give the 690 Enduro a completely new, trend-setting appearance, which also clearly displays the clean lines of a KTM-Kiska design. An add-on number plate bracket with indicators and licence plate illumination can be quickly and easily removed for solely offroad riding, so that the plate can be mounted directly below the robust LED taillight.
FRONT END The flat headlight mask incorporates a weight-reduced headlight with an H4 bulb and a plastic panel with a scratchproof coating.
COCKPIT The multifunctional instrument in the cockpit is equipped with an analogue tacho and a digital speedometer, plus lots of additional functions to provide essential information while you ride.
ENGINE
The heart of the 690 Enduro is its high-tech LC4 engine with 654 cc, which is currently serving as the role-model in the large-capacity, single-cylinder, four-stroke category. It distinguishes itself through state-of-art technology, low weight, compact construction and the highest performance. Unsurpassed 62 HP (45 kW) of power output await its pilot.
OHC CYLINDER HEAD An overhead camshaft operates the four valves (extra lightweight, hollow-shafted valves on the exhaust side) by means of two weight- and rigidity-optimized rocker arms. In combination with the compact combustion chamber, this construction makes incomparable performance and the greatest reliability possible, as well as makes servicing simple, due to the slanted attachment of the cylinder head cover.
CLUTCH When under load, the patented APTC system increases the pressure on the clutch linings, which significantly reduces the hardness of the clutch springs and thereby the hand grip strength needed to operate the hydraulic clutch in comparison with conventional systems.
ENGINE MANAGEMENT The LC4 engine is supplied via an electronic injection system, which features a 46-mm throttle plate cross-section, automatic cold start, idle-speed regulator, lambda control and altitude compensation. The EPT System (Electronic Power Throttle) produces a very homogenous power output, because the position of the throttle plate is electronically controlled in addition to the manual operation of the throttle.
