Red Bull KTM 250 star Hiroshi Aoyama surfed to a fantastic third place in today’s rain-soaked British Grand Prix. The Japanese ace had a poor start and was down in tenth position after one lap, but recovered quickly and pushed on to make his mark on the Hiroshi also had his share of luck when a crash by World Champion Jorge Lorenzo in lap 11 rewarded him with his long-expected first podium finish of the season, a result that is considered a turning point in the season for KTM’s entire 250 cc crew.

Vermeulen on the podium at Rizla Suzuki MotoGP’s ‘home’ Grand Prix 

Chris Vermeulen raced to a tremendous third-place at Donington Park today to give Rizla Suzuki MotoGP a podium in front of nearly 85,000 home fans at the British Grand Prix.


Heavy rain had fallen over the 4km English circuit all day, including during this morning’s warm-up session that saw Vermeulen become a victim of the treacherous conditions as he suffered another big crash. As the race began the rain started to ease off and Vermeulen got off to a great start, getting up to third position by the second lap, but a problem with misting inside his helmet visor saw the Australian’s visibility hampered and he dropped back to fifth and at one point ran off the track.

Chris Vermeulen recorded the fifth fastest time of the day onboard his Rizla Suzuki GSV-R at a near flooded Donington Park circuit on the first day of practice for the British Grand Prix.

Vermeulen (1’44.371, 43 laps) again showed his wet weather class, as he consistently posted competitive times around the 4km-long English track. It was not all easy going for the Australian as he did have a small crash on only his second lap of the day, as he tried to become accustomed to the slippery surface.

The British based Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team travels to Donington Park in England this weekend for the British Grand Prix, the next round of a so far profitable season, looking to continue with its fine run of form when it arrives on home-soil.

Chris Vermeulen and John Hopkins arrive in England with 72 points each – more than both riders together had accumulated at the same time last season – looking to strengthen their positions in the championship on a track that both of them enjoy. The two Rizla Suzuki MotoGP racers qualified in second and fourth places last year respectively, and without a crash for Vermeulen and a late-race grip problem for Hopkins, could have both finished in higher positions.

Stuart Shenton is John Hopkins’ Crew Chief and one of the longest serving members of the MotoGP paddock. He has worked with such greats as Kevin Schwantz and Wayne Gardner.

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP took some time out of Shenton’s busy schedule to get to know a bit more about the man who keeps the Suzuki GSV-R of Hopkins on the edge of competitiveness week in week out.
